The Democratic Party to Open Candidate Registration for Party Leadership Election from Next Month 2nd... 840,000 Party Members to be Confirmed by the End of This Month

Party Leader Deposit 90 Million Won · Supreme Council Member 40 Million Won... Youth Supreme Council 10 Million Won

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Young-won] With the 3·8 Party Convention just over two months away, the People Power Party will begin accepting candidate registrations for the convention starting from February 2. The total electorate will be finalized by the end of this month.

On the 10th, the People Power Party Central Election Commission held its third meeting at the party headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul, and decided that the cutoff date for compiling the voter list will be January 31. On the same day, the Election Commission posted the candidate registration announcement on its website and decided to accept registrations over two days, February 2 and 3.

The election and campaign period will run from February 5 until the party convention on March 8. If a runoff vote is necessary, the election period will be extended until March 12. The main election voting will take place over four days from March 4 to 7, with two days each for mobile voting and ARS voting.

The deposit amounts have been set at 90 million KRW for the party leader (40 million KRW for the preliminary round, 50 million KRW for the main round), 40 million KRW for the Supreme Council member, and 10 million KRW for the Youth Supreme Council member. These amounts represent an increase of 10 million KRW each compared to the 2020 party convention, where the party leader deposit was 80 million KRW and the Supreme Council member deposit was 30 million KRW.

Attorney Ham In-kyung, a member of the Election Commission, told reporters after the meeting, "Since the January party membership payment status has not been reflected, the current total electorate is 840,000, but there will likely be changes by the cutoff date."

The party convention electorate is divided into delegates, responsible party members, and some general party members. For this convention, the general party members who will vote will be selected by lottery. Regarding the TV debates and cutoff schedule, she responded, "Nothing has been decided yet."
