[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] SK Broadband announced on the 10th that it has supplied its cloud PC solution 'Cloud X' for the Onbook business to Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd.
'Onbook' is a work laptop that allows public officials to comply with security regulations while working not only in the office but also during business trips or telecommuting. For security, the existing practice of separately accessing the work network and the internet network with two PCs can now be done with one Onbook.
In July last year, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it would gradually expand the introduction of Onbook based on an open operating system (OS) to public institutions by 2027 to strengthen smart field administration. The ministry predicted that switching administrative officials' existing work computers to Onbook over five years would save about 4.6 trillion won in budget and reduce carbon emissions.
In particular, the Onbook project applies the latest security technologies with localization, cloud PC, and open OS to reduce dependence on foreign software (SW) in public institutions.
Korea Midland Power was selected in May last year for the '2022 Open OS Expansion Support Project' announced by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA). Korea Midland Power introduced Onbook built on the open OS 'Gooroom Platform' with support funds and its own budget, and applied SK Broadband's cloud PC solution Cloud X to the internet network VDI (Virtual Desktop Infrastructure).
Cloud X is a cloud PC solution independently developed by SK Broadband based on open-source specialized technology. By applying the MSA (Micro Service Architecture) structure, it allows flexible customization according to customer requirements, and it has obtained the latest version of the National Intelligence Service security function confirmation (Cloud X v2.0), complying with national security requirements.
Also, the core technology of 'Cloud X' is based on Linux, the same as the Gooroom OS applied to Onbook, which provides excellent compatibility and enables rapid service response. Considering the increasing use of video conferencing in work environments, video traffic processing technology within the VDI has been optimized, and based on its inherent excellent technology, the shortest period for construction and stabilization has been completed.
Lee Bang-yeol, head of SK Broadband Connect Infra CO, said, "Based on this case of building the first Onbook-based cloud PC work system for Korea Electric Power Corporation and its power generation subsidiaries, we will actively contribute to supporting the government's public institution Onbook project and open OS expansion project and to revitalizing domestic software."
