[Asia Economy Reporter Kiho Sung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 10th that it has selected six region-specific research and development projects to identify and solve disaster safety issues unique to each region, and plans to support them with 13.6 billion KRW over two years starting this year (10.9 billion KRW from the Ministry and 2.7 billion KRW from local governments).

The region-specific research and development projects support excellent tasks discovered through collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutes within the region, led by local governments. The program started in 2020 and has discovered and supported a total of 23 projects up to last year.

The main contents of the region-specific research and development projects selected this year are as follows. Chungcheongbuk-do will develop a detection system in which drones patrol designated locations at regular intervals to check for any abnormalities such as hikers getting lost or falling accidents. Jeollanam-do will advance a remote medical guidance system that allows maritime police to consult medical specialists when transporting patients from island areas to inland regions.

In addition, Daegu Metropolitan City will develop a user water quality management platform for cooperation in preventing and responding to tap water accidents; Jeollabuk-do will develop specialized firefighting equipment equipped with a water tank container and crane for extinguishing fires in electric passenger vehicles; Gyeongsangbuk-do will develop a disaster safety psychological recovery service platform; and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province will develop intelligent wind and flood detection and safety support technology for the volcanic island of Jeju.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety plans to announce the selection of research institutions to carry out the six research and development projects on the ‘Industrial Technology R&D Information Portal’ in January.

Ko Gwangwan, Director of Disaster Cooperation Policy at the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, stated, “We expect that the region-specific projects will enhance local disaster safety response capabilities and also help revitalize the regional economy,” adding, “We plan to continue prioritizing problem-solving at the frontline of disaster response and expand necessary research and development projects accordingly.”
