[Asia Economy Reporter Seomideum] Viktor An (37, Korean name An Hyeon-su), who was active as a short track speed skater in Korea before naturalizing to Russia, is expected to return as a coach.
According to an ice skating industry official on the 9th, Viktor An recently applied for the open coaching position of the Seongnam City Hall ice skating team. It is known that he has completed the document submission and is preparing for the interview.
Viktor An was a leading figure in domestic short track until 2011. He was considered a short track legend after winning three gold medals at the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics. However, when his team, Seongnam City Hall, disbanded due to financial issues in 2011, he naturalized to Russia.
In Russia, he demonstrated outstanding skills by winning three gold medals at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. After retiring as an athlete, he debuted as a coach and worked as a coach for the Chinese national team at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
Although Viktor An received contract offers from other foreign national teams, it is reported that he declined them and returned to Korea to apply for the coaching position at Seongnam City Hall.
Currently, Seongnam City Hall includes Choi Min-jeong, a leading member of the Korean women's short track national team.
