The Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party issued a memorial statement on the 9th, stating, "We commemorate the first anniversary of the late mother Bae Eun-sim, who devoted her life to democracy in the Republic of Korea."
The city party said, "In 1987, the late mother Bae Eun-sim, who lost her beloved son, martyr Lee Han-yeol, to brutal state violence, dedicated her entire life to democracy and human rights," adding, "Wherever there was a crisis of democracy, she went across the country to fight alongside them."
They continued, "She was a mother of this era who always warmly embraced the socially vulnerable and those suffering from violence," emphasizing, "She was present at every site where our society was most enraged and heartbroken, including the 2009 Yongsan tragedy, the 2016 death of farmer Baek Nam-gi, and the 2017 Sewol ferry special law enactment process."
They added, "Remembering mother Bae Eun-sim's dedication to democracy, we will not cease our actions for democracy and human rights," and "The Democratic Party of Korea will not back down in the face of the democracy crisis facing the Republic of Korea."
