[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Hyun-seok] Jeju Air announced on the 9th that it transported over 6.48 million passengers on domestic routes last year, achieving a market share of 18.2% and securing the number one position in domestic market share for three consecutive years since 2020.
According to an analysis of last year's domestic passenger transport performance using real-time statistics from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's Aviation Information Portal System on the 9th, Jeju Air transported a record-breaking 6,482,588 passengers. This is approximately 23,000 more than the previous record of 6,459,000 passengers last year. It also represents an increase of 1.6 million compared to 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since 4.64 million passengers used Jeju Air in 2017, the number of passengers has steadily increased. However, in 2020, due to strengthened social distancing measures and weakened travel sentiment caused by the spread of COVID-19, the number dropped to 4.32 million. It then surged significantly to 6.45 million in 2021 and 6.48 million in 2022.
Meanwhile, among Jeju Air's domestic passengers, approximately 5.43 million traveled on Jeju-origin routes such as Jeju~Gimpo, Busan, Cheongju, and Daegu, accounting for about 84% of the total. About 1.04 million passengers, or 16%, traveled on inland routes such as Gimpo~Busan and Daegu. By route, about 44% of all passengers, approximately 2.89 million, used the Jeju~Gimpo route, followed by the Gimpo~Busan route (about 830,000 passengers) and the Jeju~Busan route (about 770,000 passengers).
A Jeju Air official said, “Following our recent achievement of being number one in passenger numbers on Korea-Japan routes, we have now secured the top spot in domestic passenger market share for three consecutive years. This year, we will do our best to ensure that more customers can travel more comfortably and enjoyably, not only on domestic routes but also on international routes.”
