"Asked to give up the dog, then asked for a divorce?" ... 20s woman who abandoned husband's beloved dog faces increased fine in appeal trial

"Asked to give up the dog, then asked for a divorce?" ... 20s woman who abandoned husband's beloved dog faces increased fine in appeal trial Ulsan District Court.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] A woman in her 20s who, angry after being notified of divorce, threw her husband's beloved pet dog out of an apartment window, causing its death, was sentenced to a higher fine than the original sentence after contesting the sentence through the appeal trial.

The Ulsan District Court's 1st Criminal Division (Chief Judge Kim Hyun-jin) announced on the 8th that it overturned the original sentence of a 3 million won fine and sentenced a 20-year-old woman, Ms. A, who was charged with violating the Animal Protection Act, to a 5 million won fine in the appeal trial.

Ms. A was brought to trial on charges of throwing the pet dog out of the veranda of the 11th floor of an apartment in Ulsan, where she lived, after having an argument with her husband Mr. B, who had returned home drunk in March 2021, and while he briefly left the place.

According to the Ulsan District Court, Ms. A believed that the reason for her premature birth was due to the pet dog and requested to put the dog up for adoption elsewhere, saying not to raise it anymore. However, her husband refused, saying he would rather get a divorce than send the dog for adoption. Dissatisfied and angry about this, she committed the crime.

The first trial court sentenced her to a 3 million won fine, considering that although the crime was of poor nature as she cruelly killed her husband's beloved pet dog, she showed remorse and was a first-time offender. The prosecution appealed, arguing that the sentence was too light.

The second trial court stated, "Considering that she was not forgiven by her ex-husband, and that the crime was an act of disregard for life committed with a weak sense of respect for living beings, the original sentence was too light and inappropriate."
