[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] Shinsegae International announced on the 6th that it has appointed William Kim, who previously worked at global luxury brands and Samsung Electronics, as its CEO. The former CEO, Lee Gilhan, will move to the department store division and take on the role of head of the Future Innovation Promotion Group, responsible for discovering new business opportunities.
According to Shinsegae International, CEO Kim is a luxury fashion expert known in the fashion industry through his experience with global brands such as Gucci and Burberry. He is also famous for turning AllSaints, which was on the brink of bankruptcy in 2012, into profitability within a year.
In 2019, he was recruited as Vice President in charge of marketing at Samsung Electronics' wireless business division, overseeing Galaxy marketing, and last year, he served as CEO of Rapha, a UK-based global cycling apparel brand.
Shinsegae International’s recruitment of CEO Kim is interpreted as a move to strengthen competitiveness in the fashion and cosmetics sectors.
Shinsegae International expressed expectations that "the active introduction of new overseas brands, pioneering new businesses through mergers and acquisitions (M&A), global expansion of in-house brands, as well as strengthening the competitiveness of the e-commerce business SI Village will all be enhanced."
As for CEO Lee, until the personnel changes at the end of October last year, he was scheduled to serve as co-CEO of Shinsegae International alongside an external expert, but with the appointment of CEO Kim, he moved to the department store division.
Shinsegae Department Store newly established the Future Innovation Promotion Group at the executive level to discover future growth engines and promote new businesses in the department store division.
CEO Lee plans to lead the newly established organization and focus on securing sustainable competitiveness for the department store division.
Meanwhile, CEO Kim will also concurrently serve as head of Digital Intelligence at the Department Store Division’s Planning and Strategy Headquarters, aiming to strengthen digital and online business capabilities.
