[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] POSCO Group carried out its regular executive appointments on the 6th, which had been delayed to focus on recovery efforts from the flooding damage at the Pohang Steelworks.


The group explained, "We have further strengthened the executive appointment policy that emphasizes performance, field experience, and leadership, and gave preferential treatment to master craftsmen from the field who greatly contributed to the flood recovery and normalization of operations at the steelworks."


Additionally, to further reinforce the group's future growth engines, external experts were recruited, and star-level researchers in new growth business areas within group companies were selected.


Kim Ji-yong, head of POSCO Safety and Environment Headquarters, was appointed as the head of POSCO Holdings' Future Technology Research Institute. Director Kim holds a Ph.D. in Physical Metallurgy from the University of Utah and has served as head of POSCO's New Materials Business Office, head of the Indonesian PT.KP corporation, director of Gwangyang Steelworks, and head of the Safety and Environment Headquarters.

Yang Won-jun, who previously served as head of the Corporate Citizenship Office and head of the Management Support Headquarters, was appointed as head of the Communication Team.


POSCO International, the merged entity of the trading and energy businesses, established new division head positions, promoting Lee Gye-in, head of Steel Division 1, to Trading Division Head, and Lee Jeon-hyeok, head of the Energy Planning Headquarters, to Energy Division Head. Division Head Lee Gye-in is a trade expert with experience in various fields such as steel and chemicals, formerly of Daewoo, while Division Head Lee Jeon-hyeok is an energy business expert who has served as head of POSCO's Domestic Business Management Office and head of POSCO Energy's Management Planning Headquarters.


Master craftsmen from the field who dedicated themselves to flood recovery at the steelworks were also promoted to executive-level positions.


Son Byeong-rak, appointed as a technical advisor at the executive director level, graduated from Pohang Steel Technical High School in 1977 and joined POSCO. He has been responsible for maintaining electric motors, a core component driving equipment, at POSCO sites for 45 years and is recognized as the top expert in the domestic electric motor technology field. He is also POSCO's first master craftsman.


Assistant Executive Director Jo Gil-dong graduated from Pohang Steel Technical High School in 1982 and joined POSCO, mainly working in the steelmaking plant until his retirement at the end of last year, making him a steelmaking expert. Assistant Executive Director Jeong Gyu-jeom graduated from Dongui Industrial College in 1983 and joined POSCO, consistently handling electrical technology work within the steelworks and is a leading authority on electrical equipment. They were selected as POSCO master craftsmen in 2015 and 2020, respectively.


Furthermore, Hong Young-jun, former head of LG Chem's Future Technology Research Center, was recruited as the new head of the Secondary Battery Materials Research Institute. Director Hong graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in Industrial Chemistry and has served as head of LG Chem's Materials Business Division, executive director in charge of technology planning, and head of the Future Technology Research Center. Additionally, Kim Jeong-han, head of the Cathode Material Research Group at POSCO Chemical; Lee Heon-young, head of the Anode Material Research Group; Yoon Il-yong, head of the AI Technology Group at POSCO ICT; and Yoon Seok-jun, head of the Robot Business Promotion Team, were newly appointed as executive directors.


A POSCO official stated, "With 15 out of 17 rolling mills at the steelworks resuming production and the remaining mills expected to be fully operational within this month, the recovery work is entering its final stage, prompting today's announcement of appointments." He added, "We expect these executives to play a pivotal role in advancing POSCO beyond steel into a 'leading eco-friendly future materials company.'"
