The first shipment of Seongju melons from Gyeongbuk, renowned nationwide for their top quality, has been made this year.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] On the 6th, chamoe (Korean melon) was shipped for the first time this year in Seongju, Gyeongbuk, which is famous as the main production area of chamoe, accounting for more than 75% of the national chamoe cultivation area.
The chamoe shipped on this day was grown at the farm of Lee Won-sik (64) in Seongju-eup, Seongju-gun, who transplanted the seedlings on November 4 last year and overcame the cold winter. Locally, 40 boxes were delivered to the Seongju Cooperative Joint Business Corporation at an average price of 150,000 KRW per 10kg box. These chamoe are sold nationwide, including Seoul and Daegu.
This year’s Seongju chamoe boasts the highest sugar content due to generally longer sunlight hours and favorable weather conditions during the early growth stage in December last year.
In Seongju, about 3,800 farms cultivated chamoe on 3,400 hectares last year, generating an annual income of 576.3 billion KRW.
Lee Byung-hwan, the mayor of Seongju-gun, said, “In 2023, we will continue to uphold the reputation of Seongju chamoe, which boasts the world’s best quality, by implementing various policies that provide practical support to farmers and supporting market expansion through online distribution.”
