Korea Surpasses 8.18 Million... Sales Reach 101.6 Billion Won
The movie 'Avatar: The Way of Water' has earned $1.5 billion (1.896 trillion KRW) worldwide but has not yet surpassed its break-even point.
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated box office data on the 6th, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' (directed by James Cameron) attracted 91,102 viewers on the 5th, securing the number one spot at the box office. Since its release on the 14th of last month, the cumulative audience has exceeded 8,184,370. The domestic cumulative revenue recorded 101.618 billion KRW.
'Avatar: The Way of Water' is generating massive revenue worldwide. According to Box Office Mojo, 22 days after its release on the 4th, the global box office revenue reached $1.51655 billion (1.896 trillion KRW), ranking it 10th in all-time box office records. It surpassed 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which earned $1.48873 billion (1.882 trillion KRW) and ranked 11th, and 'Fast & Furious 7,' which earned $1.51534 billion (1.9162 trillion KRW) and ranked 10th.
Continued box office success is needed to surpass the break-even point. With a production cost of $350 million (450 billion KRW), the break-even point for 'Avatar: The Way of Water' is known to be $2 billion (2.531 trillion KRW). While it is close to surpassing 10 million viewers domestically, it seems that it has not gained as much traction in North America as expected.
Meanwhile, the second place was taken by director Yoon Je-kyun's musical film 'Hero,' and third place by the Japanese animation 'The First Slam Dunk.' Additionally, 'Puss in Boots: The Last Wish' and 'Switch,' starring Kwon Sang-woo and Oh Jung-se, were released on the 4th and ranked 4th and 5th respectively.
The sequel to the 2009 highest-grossing foreign film 'Avatar,' 'Avatar: The Way of Water' depicts the story of the family formed by Jake Sully and Neytiri on the planet Pandora. Surpassing 8.18 million cumulative viewers is the highest box office performance among foreign films released domestically since the pandemic.
