No Protein, Just Carbohydrate Clusters... The Betrayal of 'High-Protein Foods'

Many High-Protein Foods Fail Content Standards
Chicken Breast Sausage, Protein Bread, and More

The protein content of popular chicken breast sausages was found to be much lower than the numbers indicated on the nutrition label. The carbohydrate content was confirmed to exceed the labeled amount by more than eight times. This is devastating news for those managing a 'high-protein, low-carbohydrate' diet.

According to the industry on the 6th, the food company 'Ranking Dakcom' recently stated, "We sincerely apologize to our customers for the concern caused by the nutrition label issue of 'Bestick Chicken Breast Sausage,'" adding, "We recognized the problem with the nutrition labeling of the product, requested the manufacturer to verify the facts, and immediately stopped sales."

The company added, "To prevent recurrence, we plan to complete a full inspection of all products sold within one month," and "We will prepare compensation plans for customers who purchased the problematic products and notify them again."

The sausages sold by Ranking Dakcom are a popular product with over 10 million units sold. However, controversy grew after the food whistleblower YouTuber 'Neoguridago' claimed on the 2nd that the actual nutritional content inside the sausage product differed from the label.

According to the nutritional analysis requested by Neoguridago for this sausage, the results were △carbohydrates 7.9g △sugars 3.7g △fat 7.1g △saturated fat 2.2g △protein 19.3g.

However, the labeled values were △carbohydrates less than 1g △sugars less than 1g △fat 2.1g △saturated fat 0.7g △protein 28g. This means the carbohydrate content is nearly eight times higher than the official label.

Protein Market Has Grown, but Some Foods Are 'Below Content'

With the recent trend of healthy diets, the processed food market with increased protein content is also expanding. These so-called 'protein foods' are popular processed products such as sausages, bread, and coffee, which have added high-protein ingredients or protein powder.

Protein foods are gaining great popularity because they allow people to consume protein regularly, which is otherwise difficult to intake. However, some protein foods show discrepancies between the nutrition label and the actual nutritional content, so caution is needed.

For example, in October last year, the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment collected 50 protein food products sold online and in department stores and analyzed their nutritional content, finding four products with protein content below the labeled amount.

All four under-content products were sold online. One protein bread labeled its protein ratio as 20% of the product weight, but actual measurement showed only 10.1%, about half. Three processed fish and meat products such as sausages also showed actual content at a minimum of 39.7% compared to the labeled amount.

The Institute of Health and Environment pointed out, "As the protein market grows, protein foods that are easy to eat and taste good are gaining popularity, but since protein foods emphasize protein content in their sales, accurate nutrition labeling is necessary to protect consumers' choices and rights."
