[Asia Economy Reporter Noh Kyung-jo] The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 6th that it will operate a special parcel delivery management period for the Lunar New Year peak season for four weeks from the 9th of this month to the 4th of next month.
The special parcel delivery management period has been in operation since Chuseok 2020 to provide smooth delivery services during the holiday peak season and to prevent overwork among parcel delivery workers.
To prepare for the surge in delivery volume during this period, the Ministry plans to deploy an additional 6,000 temporary workers to parcel delivery sites. This includes 1,458 trunk vehicle drivers, 1,073 temporary drivers, 1,908 terminal support staff, and 1,295 delivery assistants.
The right of parcel delivery workers to rest is also guaranteed. As major parcel delivery companies have decided to restrict the collection of delivery items starting two days before the Lunar New Year holiday, most parcel delivery workers will be guaranteed a four-day holiday (January 21?24).
Additionally, parcel delivery workers will not be held responsible for any delivery delays. Measures such as calculating the appropriate daily delivery volume and restricting terminal intake for excess volumes will also be implemented.
The Ministry encouraged local governments and public institutions, which have many orders for holiday peak products, to place 'pre-orders' to prevent parcel deliveries from concentrating during specific periods.
Gu Heon-sang, Director of Logistics Policy at the Ministry, said, "Simply ordering parcels in advance during the holiday period can greatly contribute to smooth delivery and prevent overwork among parcel delivery workers. We ask for active participation in pre-ordering parcels before the Lunar New Year and kindly ask for understanding with a warm heart even if some delivery delays occur."
