Demand for Diet Foods Also Soars
Office worker Lee Jun-young (41, male) purchased chicken breast and diet shakes to welcome the new year. Lee said, "Since the COVID-19 pandemic, I have been gaining weight continuously, and if this continues, I think I will exceed 90kg," adding, "Before summer comes, I am determined to succeed in dieting through home training (home workouts) and dietary therapy."
According to 11st on the 6th, sales of home workout products such as yoga wear (380%), walking machines (362%), ellipticals (43%), health cycles (40%), steppers (36%), treadmills (33%), and weight equipment (33%) sharply increased from the 29th of last month to the 4th of this month compared to the previous month. On Gmarket, sales of yoga and Pilates products increased by 60% compared to the previous month, horseback riding exercise equipment by 50%, health products by 17%, and health cycles by 8%. On Lotte ON, sales of weight equipment rose by 120%, yoga and Pilates clothing by 60%, and health equipment by 30%. On SSG.com, sales in the health, diet, and yoga categories surged by 50%.
Home workouts have now become part of people's daily lives. As the time spent at home has lengthened over the past few years, red flags have been raised regarding weight management, and recently, due to the economic downturn and reduced consumer spending, there has been a tendency to prefer home workouts over gyms. According to Open Survey's 'Health Management Trend Report 2022,' when 1,000 men and women aged 20 to 69 were asked about their current exercise activities, the top five were walking (57.9%), home workouts (16.2%), hiking and trekking (14.7%), gym workouts (13.9%), and jogging and running (12.1%). The top three all fall into exercises with relatively low expenditure.
Demand for diet foods has also increased significantly. On 11st, sales of chicken breast rose by 72% and health supplements by 18% compared to the previous month. The sales proportion by age group was 23.9% for women in their 40s, 16.9% for women in their 50s, 13.2% for women in their 30s, 11.9% for men in their 40s, and 10.4% for men in their 50s. On Gmarket, sales of diet foods and dietary fiber increased by 16% and 17%, respectively. On Lotte ON, salad sales rose by 20% and diet supplements by 10%. On SSG.com, sales of diet and beauty foods increased by 40%. On Kurly, sales of diet health functional foods increased by 36%, chicken breast by 29%, and half-boiled and roasted eggs by 12%.
