Connectivity Appeal Stood Out

[Report] Samsung Electronics Draws Attention at CES with Connectivity Despite No Surprise New Products

[Las Vegas=Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] An exhibition where new products are not prominently highlighted. A space where connectivity-focused platforms and Samsung's technological prowess stood out more than hardware products. These were the reactions from domestic and international reporters touring Samsung Electronics' booth on the 4th (local time), a day before the opening of the world's largest electronics and IT exhibition CES 2023.

This year, Samsung Electronics did not emphasize superlatives such as 'world's best,' 'world's first,' or 'world's largest' when showcasing products at the Las Vegas Convention Center (LVCC). Even after touring the exhibition hall, which was the largest among LVCC participants at 3,368㎡ (about 1,019 pyeong), there were no striking new products that could be called "revolutionary."

Even the newly unveiled SmartThings hub at CES 2023, the 'SmartThings Station,' mainly demonstrated the convenience brought by SmartThings' customized connectivity, with minimal emphasis on the product itself. The booth clearly reflected the desire to show that rather than 'manufacturing,' Samsung can realize technologies that help humanity through connectivity between products.

The exhibition booth was broadly divided into five sections: ▲Sustainability ▲Home Security ▲Family Care ▲Health & Wellness ▲Entertainment ▲Smart Work. Upon entering the booth, visitors were greeted by five screens, including a large LED screen approximately 8.6m wide and 4.3m tall. Through these, visitors could preview the hyper-connected experience Samsung emphasizes.

In the Sustainability zone, visitors could place cubes representing eco-friendly activities across 11 product life cycle stages?sourcing, production, usage, packaging, disposal?on sensors and interact with the display. In the Home Security zone, visitors could experience how Samsung's connectivity technology maintains safety and security by activating sensors in an empty house when going out.

In the automotive electronics business with Harman, Samsung Electronics also showcased connectivity and customer experience well.

The vehicle was designed not just as a space for transportation but as a space to maximize smart experiences (ICX). When boarding the vehicle displayed at the booth, cameras, radar sensors, and machine learning algorithms autonomously measured the driver's cognitive level and monitored state changes to maintain optimal driving conditions. If attention waned, a warning alarm sounded and mood-enhancing music played. If the driver was judged to be drowsy, the air conditioning system automatically activated to ensure driving safety.

Connectivity among home appliances also helps manage users' health. In the Smart Workout zone, when walking or running, Samsung's person-device connectivity function records the user's exercise data and automatically switches to health management mode by monitoring pulse and weight. Information tailored to the user's health status is linked to the refrigerator, and the refrigerator panel display shows recipes suitable for the user's health. When a recipe is selected, the connected water purifier dispenses the required amount of water automatically, and the oven temperature is set automatically to match the food.

On this day, Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Han Jong-hee took the stage as the keynote speaker at a press conference held at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas, stating, "It is a time that requires new challenges to realize the completion of the connected experience promised by Samsung Electronics," and added, "Our ultimate vision is to realize technologies that embody everyone's dreams and wishes through connectivity."
