According to local media such as CNN and NBC News, the accident occurred on the morning of the 3rd (local time) on the coastal road known as 'Devil's Slide' in San Mateo, south of San Francisco.
The Tesla, carrying four people?an adult man and woman, a 9-year-old boy, and a 4-year-old girl?fell off the cliff while traveling south on California State Route 1. They were transported to a hospital and are reported to be in critical condition. It has not yet been confirmed whether they are family members.
The San Mateo County Fire Department conducted rescue operations using helicopters and other resources. The media reported that all four were conscious at the time and were taken to a nearby hospital. It was also noted that the children were seated in car seats secured inside the vehicle during the rescue.
A representative from the San Mateo County Fire Department expressed surprise upon finding the survivors, stating, "This area is not uncommon for accidents, but having multiple survivors in such an accident is very rare."
The fire department explained that the Tesla was not set to autonomous driving mode at the time of the accident.
Meanwhile, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) suspects the accident was caused by driver negligence or mishandling, and the exact circumstances and cause are expected to be revealed after investigation.
