Last Year 7.18 to 1 → This Year 6.71 to 1
Capital Area Medical Schools Rise to 15.71 to 1
"Decrease in Seoul, Increase in Regional Applications"
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] Following major universities in Seoul, the competition rate for 39 medical schools nationwide also declined compared to last year. It is analyzed that the preference for medical schools in the regular admission process was not significant because a large number of high scorers on the CSAT were admitted through early admission.
According to Jongro Academy on the 3rd, the competition rate for the 39 medical schools nationwide in the 2023 academic year regular admission was an average of 6.71 to 1, lower than last year's 7.18 to 1.
The total number of regular admission slots for the 39 medical schools nationwide was 1,170, 98 fewer than last year's 1,268. The number of applicants was 7,850, a decrease of 1,259 from last year's 9,109. Given that the number of CSAT test takers did not change significantly and the number of medical school slots decreased, the reduction in applicants to medical schools nationwide is considered unusual.
The admissions industry views this regular admission as having a reduced group of top-tier CSAT scorers. Many high scorers on the CSAT were admitted through early admission, resulting in a decrease in the top-tier group applying through regular admission.
The competition rate for medical schools located in the metropolitan area was 15.71 to 1, significantly higher than last year's 13.46 to 1. Inha University recorded the highest competition rate among medical schools nationwide at 31.06 to 1. The competition rate for medical schools in provincial areas was 7.76 to 1, and for Seoul small medical schools, it was 3.74 to 1.
Daegu Catholic University had a competition rate of 28.77 to 1, Dongguk University (WISE) 26.15 to 1, Busan Kosin University 24.19 to 1, Soonchunhyang University 22.96 to 1, and Keimyung University 17.50 to 1.
Earlier, in early admissions, provincial medical schools selected 70% of their total slots through regional talent screening, leading Seoul and metropolitan area students to avoid provincial medical schools, while local residents concentrated on provincial medical schools. In this regular admission, since provincial medical schools select more than 70-80% of students on a nationwide basis, it is analyzed that a considerable number of Seoul and metropolitan area students applied to provincial medical schools.
Lim Sung-ho, CEO of Jongro Academy, analyzed, “The higher competition rate for metropolitan area medical schools compared to Seoul is the combined effect of Seoul residents applying downward to metropolitan medical schools, and top-tier provincial students applying upward aiming for metropolitan medical schools.”
