[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Jung Woo-taek, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly, raised his voice that the ruling and opposition parties should put aside their interests and engage in discussions, stating that the multi-member constituency system proposed by President Yoon Seok-yeol should be actively considered.
On the 3rd, Deputy Speaker Jung said through his social media service (SNS), "It should be actively considered to resolve the political crisis where cooperation is lost and the political spectrum is divided into extremes."
He pointed out, "The single-member constituency system for National Assembly members, which has continued since the 13th general election in 1988, has caused many side effects," adding, "When one person is elected, the opposing camp devotes the next four years to demonizing and destroying the elected member through desperate destructive and confrontational politics, which has led to the production of wasted votes, regionalism, and intensified extreme factional politics."
Deputy Speaker Jung said, "Of course, the multi-member constituency system is not a panacea," but added, "Although there are concerns about the proliferation of minor parties, in the current political reality thoroughly divided into extremes, I believe the benefits outweigh the drawbacks."
