"Worries About Heating Bills Decrease... Europe Smiles Wryly at Global Warming"

Switzerland Dolemont 20.2 Degrees... Ski Resorts Also Suspended

As mild weather continues in Europe, abnormal high temperatures have been observed, including record-breaking January highs from the first day of the new year. Some voices express ironic relief that Europe, suffering an energy crisis since the Ukraine war, has experienced reduced heating costs. As the weather has warmed recently, European gas prices have fallen, even reaching levels seen just before the Ukraine war.

On the 2nd (local time), foreign media including The Brussels Times reported that the temperature in Del?mont, Jura Canton in northwestern Switzerland, was observed at 20.2 degrees Celsius the previous day. This surpassed the 19.4 degrees recorded on January 12, 1993. The Swiss Federal Meteorological Office also stated that it was the first time temperatures north of the Alps exceeded 20 degrees. Due to this weather, some ski resorts in Switzerland are currently closed.

Mild weather continues in Europe. On the same day, Warsaw, the capital of Poland, recorded 18.9 degrees Celsius, similar to summer temperatures, which the Polish Meteorological Office said was the 'highest ever' for winter.

Belgium and the Netherlands also saw temperatures exceed 15 degrees on the same day, breaking their respective record January highs. Most parts of Europe, including Denmark, Germany, Austria, and France, experienced temperatures above the seasonal average.

Experts analyzed that the recent influx of warm air from the southwest into Europe is the cause. Additionally, since Europe suffered record-breaking heatwaves last summer, some opinions suggest that the winter high-temperature phenomenon is closely related to global warming.
