The Life of Daemok Unfolded Through Oral Narratives and Videos

The National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage's National Wanju Cultural Heritage Research Center announced on the 3rd that it has published a report titled "Oral and Visual Life History of Modern and Contemporary Daemok." The report highlights artisans who have worked as daemok carpenters in the Jeonbuk region, preserving and passing down traditional culture. Daemok refers to craftsmen who handle wood and build houses in construction work. Based on oral and video records secured last year, the research center organized the lives and traditional techniques of daemok in chronological order. An official explained, "We transcribed the content into standard language and regional dialects without altering the original meaning," adding, "For regional dialects, we used a phoneme notation method that records morphemes exactly as they sound." The book is broadly divided into photographic records of modern and contemporary daemok held by national and public museums, and the oral life histories of daemok Kim Jeong-rak, Jeon Myeong-bok, and Kang Ui-hwan. The latter can also be viewed in videos that include standard language subtitles, phoneme subtitles, and sign language interpretation.
