83% of Developers Say "Startup Winter" Continues This Year

[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] More than 8 out of 10 developers expect the harsh winter in the startup industry to continue this year as well.


Career tech startup Publy announced on the 3rd that it conducted a survey targeting 482 users of its developer SNS 'Careerly.' In response to the question, "Will the startup harsh winter end in 2023?" 83% of respondents answered "It seems it will continue," while only 17% said "It seems it will end."


To the question, "Will developer recruitment become more active in 2023?" 51% predicted "It will be more difficult than last year," and 40% expected "It will be similar to last year."


The developer roles considered promising even amid the startup recession were also announced. The most visionary role chosen by developers was machine learning developer (28%), followed by backend developer (23%), data developer (20%), frontend developer (11%), and application developer (9%).


In the promising startup industry sector, B2B SaaS (22%) was ranked first. Next were fintech (21%), commerce (17%), platform/community (16%), and blockchain (16%).


Kim Kwang-jong, Careerly business leader, stated, "As the IT companies and startup recruitment market have shrunk due to the recent economic downturn, industry insiders starting 2023 are also in a state of tension."


Meanwhile, Careerly supports developers in strengthening their careers by providing networking opportunities with current developers from leading tech companies and offering various content.
