Daejeon Wood Culture Index Awarded 'Best' in Metropolitan City Category

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Daejeon City has been selected as the best institution in the metropolitan city category in the Wood Culture Index Measurement Project.

The city announced on the 3rd that it received the highest score among metropolitan cities in the ‘2022 Wood Culture Index Measurement Project’ hosted by the Korea Forest Service and organized by the Wood Culture Promotion Association.

The Wood Culture Index received by the city was 65.4 points, which is 12.5 points higher than the metropolitan city average of 52.9 points. Notably, Daejeon is the only metropolitan city with a Wood Culture Index exceeding 60 points. This year’s score is also 11.1 points higher than the previous year.

This achievement is attributed to the city’s active operation of both face-to-face and non-face-to-face wood experience programs at the Daejeon Wood Culture Experience Center despite the COVID-19 situation, as well as well-received programs such as the visiting free semester program ‘Ttukttak Ttukttak! Wood Experience Classroom’ conducted in local schools and the collaborative local woodworking workshop program ‘Seulgiroun Mokgong Saenghwal’ (Wise Woodworking Life).

Last year, the city was selected for four Korea Forest Service public projects including the creation of a wood-friendly city and an eco-friendly wooden observatory, and it also co-hosted the Korea Wood Industry Expo with the Korea Forest Service and the Korea Federation of Wood Industry Organizations, becoming the first non-capital region to do so.

Shin Yong-hyun, Director of the Environmental Greenery Bureau of the city, said, “The rise in the Wood Culture Index is the result of efforts such as the wooden transformation of the local urban environment and the expansion of wood experience program operations. The city will continue to promote various policies to revitalize wood culture.”

Meanwhile, the Wood Culture Index is a numerical indicator showing the degree of establishment and promotion of wood culture, measuring how easily citizens can access and use wood and the awareness of wood culture in daily life.

According to the ‘Act on Sustainable Use of Wood,’ the Korea Forest Service annually commissions the Wood Culture Promotion Association to measure and announce the Wood Culture Index of 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide, distinguishing between metropolitan cities and provinces.
