Emart Freezes Prices on Premium Lunar New Year Sets Including Gulbi and Galchi

Emart announced on the 3rd that it will freeze the prices of this year’s Seol (Lunar New Year) Gulbi (dried yellow corvina) sets at last year’s Seol and Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving) prices until the 22nd.

As a representative set, the ‘Premium Gold Yeonggwang Chamgulbi No.1 (1.7kg/10 fish)’ is on sale for 302,400 KRW, and the ‘Special Yeonggwang Chamgulbi No.1 (1.0kg/10 fish)’ is on sale for 86,400 KRW, with a total of 12 types of gulbi sets prepared.

Following the recent trend of increasing sales of premium gift sets, Emart secured up to 50% additional stock of the highest-grade gulbi sets. For example, the ‘Peacock Emperor Gulbi (1.5kg/5 fish)’, which previously prepared 100 sets for holidays at 493,200 KRW, has increased the planned quantity to up to 200 sets for this Seol. The Peacock Emperor Gulbi set is considered the highest grade among all chamjogi (yellow corvina) stocks, with an average weight of about 500g per fish, which is about five times the size of the chamjogi used for general gift sets weighing 85g to 100g.

In addition, the prices of popular premium sets composed of Jeju Daewang Galchi (large cutlassfish), Okdom (tilefish), and Geumtae (rockfish) were also frozen at last year’s holiday prices. The ‘Jeju Wang Galchi Set (2kg, 3 fish)’ is on sale for 270,000 KRW, the ‘Geumtae Okdom Set (Geumtae 600g, 2 fish / Okdom 900g, 3 fish)’ for 238,400 KRW, and the ‘Peacock Emperor Okdom (1.5kg, 3 fish)’ for 223,200 KRW.

An Emart representative said, “Despite the rise in chamjogi wholesale prices, we have been preparing since last October to freeze the prices of gulbi sets, whose customer purchases have steadily increased during recent holidays,” adding, “Considering the popularity trend of premium sets, we also froze the prices of gift sets composed of high-grade fish species to expand customers’ purchasing options.”
