Democratic Party Gwangju Branch Emphasizes 'Inheriting Gwangju Spirit and Livelihood' During May 18 Memorial Visit

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] On the morning of the 2nd, the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party paid respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery and pledged to perpetually inherit the Gwangju Spirit and focus on people’s livelihood in 2023.


On this day, marking the Year of the Black Rabbit, about 100 participants including Lee Byung-hoon, Chairman of the Gwangju City Party (Member of the National Assembly for Dong-gu Nam-gu Eul), chairpersons of eight regional committees (Yoon Young-duk, Song Gap-seok, Jung Moon-sung (acting), Jo Oh-seop, Lee Hyung-seok, Lee Yong-bin, Song Nam-soo (acting)), elected officials affiliated with the party, and key party members took part.


They honored the spirits of the May 18 victims who sacrificed for democracy in the Republic of Korea by offering flowers and incense.


Following the memorial, the Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party held a New Year’s greeting meeting where the city party chairman, regional chairpersons, and advisory group exchanged New Year greetings and well-wishes.


Chairman Lee said, “Every time I pay respects at the National May 18th Democratic Cemetery, I am reminded anew of the meaning of democracy,” adding, “We have the duty to look after the people’s livelihood, which has become difficult since the inauguration of the Yoon Seok-yeol government, and to prevent attempts at prosecutorial dictatorship.”


He continued, “For the Democratic Party of Korea to become a party for the people, we must unite our strength,” and added, “It is time for all of us to pool our efforts to transform into a people-centered Democratic Party to inherit the Gwangju Spirit and achieve victory in the 2024 general election.”
