New Confirmed Cases 22,735, About 2,800 Fewer Than Last Week...637 Severe Cases (Update) On the 22nd, as the winter resurgence of COVID-19 continued, citizens were getting tested at the screening clinic of Yongsan-gu Public Health Center in Seoul. [Asia Economy Reporter Byeon Seon-jin] The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the 2nd, 22,735 new COVID-19 cases were confirmed, bringing the total to 29,139,535.


The number of new cases decreased by 34,792 compared to the previous day (57,527) due to reduced testing over the weekend. It also decreased by 2,796 compared to a week ago on the 26th (25,531). The scale of confirmed cases has been declining for six consecutive days compared to a week ago.


The number of critically ill patients currently hospitalized increased by 1 to 637 compared to the previous day. After reaching the highest number in about eight months the day before, the number of critically ill patients has remained in the 600s for two consecutive days.


There were 53 new COVID-19 related deaths. The cumulative death toll stands at 32,272, with a fatality rate of 0.11%.
