[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] On December 31, the last day of 2022, Dongdaemun-gu Mayor Lee Pil-hyung visited the National 5.18 Democratic Cemetery to pay tribute and reaffirm his New Year’s resolution.
As he concluded his first year in office, he visited the 5.18 gravesite, a sacred place of patriotism and democracy, to pledge that Dongdaemun-gu will dedicate itself more to the happiness of its residents in the coming year.
Mayor Lee and other district officials held a group incense offering and flower tribute, honoring the spirits of the 5.18 victims who sacrificed themselves for democracy on this land, and took time to engrave in their hearts the commitment to uphold the democratic values of the Republic of Korea built upon their blood and sweat.
They paid respects at the graves of those who devoted themselves to the 5.18 Democratization Movement, including Mr. Song Geon-ho, and also held a group tribute and moment of silence for unidentified victims such as Mr. Jeong ○○, who sacrificed for individuals and families.
After touring the cemetery, Mayor Lee said, “Just as sacrifices were necessary to establish democracy, protecting and advancing that democracy will also require much effort and sacrifice.” He left the phrase 'Wiguk Heonsin (Devotion to the Nation),' a quote from patriot Ahn Jung-geun, in the guestbook and promised to dedicate himself to making the Republic of Korea a freer and more democratic country.
On the Morning of January 1, Visited the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery and the Memorial Monument for the 16 Patriots of the Korean War to Pay Tribute to the Fallen Patriots and National Heroes
After the tribute, Mayor Lee and district officials visited Mudeungsan, a representative mountain of Gwangju, to strengthen their New Year’s resolution for 2023.
After a five-hour hike with colleagues who had shared hardships and joys in 2022, Mayor Lee Pil-hyung, who reached the summit of Mudeungsan, said, “The core tasks for Dongdaemun-gu in 2023 are safety and leap forward. To prevent horrific incidents like the Itaewon tragedy from recurring, we will mobilize all possible personnel and resources for the safety of our residents. Without complacency, like the 5.18 democratic martyrs who devoted everything for a democratic Korea, I will strive for a better and more developed Dongdaemun-gu.” He concluded the schedule with these reflections.
On the morning of January 1, Mayor Lee also visited the National Seoul Memorial Cemetery and the Memorial Monument for the 16 Patriots of the Korean War to pay tribute to the fallen patriots and national heroes.
