[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Su-yeon] Going forward, broadcasters' ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management efforts will be reflected in broadcast evaluations.
The Korea Communications Commission held its 67th plenary session on the 28th and announced the approval of a partial amendment to the "Broadcast Evaluation Rules."
This amendment was prepared to reflect broadcasters' ESG efforts in broadcast evaluations, following the national agenda announced last May. From August to December, the Commission conducted expert discussions, collected opinions from operators, held deliberations by the Broadcast Evaluation Committee, and carried out administrative notifications.
According to the amendment to the Broadcast Evaluation Rules, a new evaluation criterion titled "Board reporting on environmental, social, and transparent management and efforts in environmental management" has been established. Up to 10 additional points will be awarded based on the evaluation results. This evaluation item applies to central terrestrial TV and comprehensive programming channel operators.
Although the previous Broadcast Evaluation Rules included evaluation items related to social responsibility and transparent management, they did not cover management efforts across environmental, social, and transparent governance or environmental management-related evaluation items. Therefore, this amendment newly establishes these as evaluation criteria.
Han Sang-hyuk, Chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, stated, "With this amendment to the 'Broadcast Evaluation Rules,' we expect to promote broadcasters' efforts in environmental, social, and transparent management, which have become increasingly important across society, and to enhance the level of broadcasters' fulfillment of social responsibilities."
The amended "Broadcast Evaluation Rules" will be applied starting from the 2023 broadcast evaluation conducted in 2024.
