Damyang-gun Selected for 50 Billion KRW Scale 'Region-Specific Integrated River Project'

Damyang Gwanbangcheon Reborn as a Premium Stream

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Gwanbang district of the Yeongsan River has been selected for the ‘Regionally Customized Integrated River Project’ with a total project cost of 50 billion KRW, and Gwanbangcheon near Damyang-gun’s representative tourist attractions such as Juknokwon, Gwanbangjerim, and Metasequoia Road will be reborn as a premium river.

Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 23rd that the Gwanbang district of the Yeongsan River was finally selected for the ‘Regionally Customized Integrated River Project’ announced by the Ministry of Environment.

The ‘Regionally Customized Integrated River Project’ is a new concept integrated river project promoted by the Ministry of Environment that aims to promote regional development through flood safety as well as development tailored to the environment, ecology, and regional characteristics.

With a total project cost of 50 billion KRW (50% national funds, 15% provincial funds, 35% county funds), the plan is to carry out embankment festivals and embankment reinforcement, ecological parks, waterfront spaces, and night theme parks over approximately 4.7 km from Hakdong-ri (Hakdonggyo Bridge) to Samdari (Samdagyo Bridge) in Damyang-eup.

The county expects that once the Yeongsan River Gwanbang district integrated river project is completed, it will not only prevent disasters and improve the environment but also have a significant ripple effect on the local economy.

County Governor Lee Byeongno said, “We will thoroughly prepare and promote the Gwanbang district to be reborn as a premium river in connection with Juknokwon, Gwanbangjerim, and Metasequoia Road, which are representative tourist destinations in Jeonnam with 3.6 million visitors annually.”

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Environment plans to prepare basic plans starting next year for the 22 selected sites among the project sites submitted by local governments nationwide and to gradually promote the projects from 2024.
