[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has announced that large-scale rallies will be held in various parts of the city this weekend on Christmas, anticipating significant traffic disruptions, and urged the public to use detours or public transportation.
According to the police on the 23rd, progressive group Candlelight Conversion Action and conservative group Liberty Unification Party are expected to hold a large-scale rally with an estimated 8,000 participants in the Jung-gu area of Seoul the following day. The police plan to operate reversible lanes in sections including Sungnyemun, Samgakji Station, and Donghwa Duty-Free Shop, where the rallies will take place. Additionally, as Candlelight Conversion Action marches from Taepyeong R through the Bank of Korea toward Sungnyemun, Namdaemun-ro will have reversible lanes operated in the opposite direction of the march route.
The police will install about 53 guide signboards around the rally and march routes and deploy approximately 180 personnel, including traffic police, to manage vehicle detours and traffic control. A police official urged, "Please use public transportation such as the subway as much as possible, and if you use a vehicle, check traffic information in advance." Detailed traffic conditions during the rally times can be checked through the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's traffic information hotline, the Traffic Information Center website, and the Seoul Police Traffic Information KakaoTalk channel.
