[Asia Economy Reporter Choi Dae-yeol] CJ Logistics announced on the 21st that it has received approval for the "Dedicated Tanker Truck Operation Demonstration Project for Liquefied Hydrogen Transportation," which was applied for under the regulatory sandbox system. The regulatory sandbox is a system that exempts or defers regulations for a certain period to facilitate the launch of new products and services.
With this approval, CJ Logistics will operate the liquefied hydrogen tanker transportation business for SK E&S, which will produce liquefied hydrogen in the second half of next year. This is the first time in the domestic logistics industry to transport liquefied hydrogen, and during the course of the business, standards for tanker safety and transportation criteria will be established. The demonstration project period is two years, from April next year to March the year after next, including the preparation period.
CJ Logistics will be responsible for transporting liquefied hydrogen from SK E&S’s Incheon liquefied hydrogen plant to hydrogen refueling stations nationwide and refueling at the stations. The empty tankers, after refueling, will return to the liquefied hydrogen plant in Incheon. A dedicated safety management officer will ride along the tanker vehicles to establish and enhance standard processes related to transportation procedures and safety management for liquefied hydrogen transportation.
CJ Logistics will deploy 40 hydrogen tankers for this project. The transportation areas include Incheon and 12 hydrogen refueling stations nationwide. The hydrogen tankers will initially use products manufactured in the United States, and domestic tankers will be introduced once production by domestic tanker manufacturers begins.
