[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jaegil] The 'Southwest Region Wide Living Resource Recovery Center,' jointly promoted by Jeongeup City, Gochang County, and Buan County in Jeonbuk, held its opening ceremony on the 16th and officially began operations.
According to the city on that day, the Southwest Region Wide Living Resource Recovery Center is a facility that sorts recyclable resources such as glass bottles, plastics, and paper.
Due to the aging and deterioration of recycling sorting facilities operated separately in Jeongeup, Gochang, and Buan, which led to decreased sorting efficiency, the three municipalities jointly applied for and promoted the project under the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs' 2017 'Regional Happiness Living Zone Linked Cooperation Contest Project.'
The Southwest Region Wide Living Resource Recovery Center was established on a site of 27,827㎡ with a building area of 2,877㎡ (871 pyeong).
A total project cost of 10.7 billion KRW (1.9 billion KRW national funds, 600 million KRW provincial funds, 8.2 billion KRW city and county funds) was invested, with Jeongeup City bearing 50% and Gochang and Buan Counties each bearing 25% of the costs.
The Living Resource Recovery Center consists of three buildings: the recycling sorting building, the compression and crushing building, and the sorted goods storage building.
The center can sort about 30 tons of recyclable waste per day through an automated sorting system including magnetic separators and optical sorters.
After completing the Living Resource Recovery Center, the city maintained the facility, hired personnel, and coordinated with Gochang and Buan Counties to prepare detailed operational plans including operating expenses.
In this regard, the three municipalities of Jeongeup, Gochang, and Buan held a ceremony on the 16th to celebrate the opening of the Southwest Region Wide Living Resource Recovery Center.
About 100 people attended the event, including Mayor Lee Hak-su, Buan County Governor Kwon Ik-hyun, National Assemblyman Yoon Jun-byeong, Jeollabuk-do Deputy Governor Jo Bong-eop, Jeongeup City Council Chairman Go Kyung-yoon, provincial, city, and county council members, related officials, and general citizens.
The event included a progress report on the project, commendations for contributors to the center's construction, and a guided tour of the facility led by the supervision team (construction company).
The newly opened Southwest Region Wide Living Resource Recovery Center plans to undergo comprehensive trial operations for two weeks from the 19th to the 30th and start full operations from January next year.
The city expects that with the establishment of the new Living Resource Recovery Center to supplement aging equipment and replace manual sorting methods, the efficiency and economic feasibility of the recycling process will improve significantly, along with greatly enhanced working conditions for employees through the prevention of safety accidents.
Mayor Lee Hak-su said, "We expect to stably process recyclable resources from the three municipalities and provide citizens with a pleasant and clean urban environment," adding, "We will continue to seek recycling policy measures suitable for an eco-friendly ecological city."
