Let's Have Fun at COEX This Year-End! ... Gangnam-gu 'Winter Festival' Held

[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangnam-gu (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) will hold the ‘2022 Winter Festival’ from the 19th to the 25th throughout the Trade Center and COEX in Samseong-dong, and at midnight on the 31st, a drone light show will be broadcast on outdoor electronic billboards as part of the ‘2023 Countdown’ event.

Co-hosted by Gangnam-gu, Korea International Trade Association, and COEX MICE Cluster Committee, this event consists of ▲ COEX art exhibition embodying wishes for the Year of the Black Rabbit ▲ Yeongdong-daero media show ‘Christmas Gift’ ▲ 2023 Yeongdong-daero countdown event, among others.

Now in its 9th year, the Winter Festival is a festival held annually at COEX where visitors enjoy artworks themed on the zodiac animal symbolizing the new year and pray for wish fulfillment. To celebrate 2023, the Year of the Black Rabbit (Gyemyo Year), a 6-meter-tall large rabbit balloon art sculpture called ‘MONY (Mate Of New Year)’ will be installed at the east plaza of COEX from the 19th to the 25th. Additionally, a 2.5-meter moon sculpture and a photo zone called ‘Sinmyodal Seong’ made of 15 wish rabbits will be showcased.

Also, in the COEX lobby, visitors can see ‘Amulet Myoryeongjeon,’ an exhibition featuring works by over 50 artists themed on the Gyemyo Year rabbit, and ‘Brick Korea Exhibition,’ displaying rabbit LEGO works by about 200 brick artists.

Especially from the 22nd to the 25th, the Yeongdong-daero media show ‘Christmas Gift’ will be screened on nine outdoor electronic billboards across seven locations including COEX Artium in Samseong-dong. The media performance, harmonized with carol music and vivid colors, will make the Christmas and year-end atmosphere even more special. It will be shown three times daily at 4:40 PM, 5:40 PM, and 6:40 PM, with each screening lasting 7 minutes.

Furthermore, the pre-exhibition program ‘Wish Garden’ for the ‘2023 Yeongdong-daero Countdown’ hosted by Gangnam-gu, Hyundai Motor Company, and Korea International Trade Association will operate at the east plaza of COEX from the 17th to the 31st. ‘Wish Garden’ is an urban garden filled with New Year wishes, decorated with a wish tower media wall and an interactive flower field. Here, an SNS participation event will be held where individuals can share personalized wish videos created using the countdown drone show footage.

Meanwhile, starting at 11:57 PM on the 31st, the ‘2023 Yeongdong-daero Countdown’ event will broadcast drone light show videos on two outdoor electronic billboards around COEX. The spectacular light show, created by flying 1,000 drones in the night sky, will cheer for a hopeful new year. The video will be live-streamed on JTBC and YouTube (Gangnam-gu, Hyundai Motor Company channels).

Jo Seong-myeong, Mayor of Gangnam-gu, said, “I hope the Winter Festival, a winter celebration wishing for the fulfillment of New Year’s wishes, will be an opportunity to deliver a message of hope for the new year to residents and tourists,” and added, “We will continue to cooperate with related organizations in the Gangnam MICE tourism special zone to hold seasonally tailored events and create a global tourist attraction.”
