Daegu Dong-gu Office announced on the 12th, "At the 5th Leading Dining District Competition jointly hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and aT Korea Agro-Fisheries & Food Trade Corporation, the Dakttongjip Alley in Pyeonghwa Market, Dong-gu, Daegu, was selected as the top winner, receiving the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Award."
Pyeonghwa Market received a prize of 20 million KRW, and the organizing department, Dong-gu Office Food Industry Division, also received an encouragement fund of 3 million KRW.
Daegu Dong-gu Office started the 'Pyeonghwa Market Dakttongjip Alley Premium Theme Road Project' in 2019 to revitalize Pyeonghwa Market, the oldest alley themed around food, and completed it in December 2021.
The main projects included creating a themed street specialized environment applying Yellow Bands, developing characters and brands named Chikki and Ppasak, developing differentiated cultural tourism content unique to Dakttongjip Alley, producing records of the alley’s unique stories, and developing recipes needed by the merchants' association.
As Pyeonghwa Market has been recognized as the best dining street in South Korea, Daegu Dong-gu Office plans to foster it as a representative dining alley of Daegu with keywords such as strengthening the community centered on the merchants' association, enhancing promotion through SNS and video publicity, and sustainable alley development.
Yoon Seok-jun, head of Daegu Dong-gu Office, said, "It is very meaningful that the Dakttongjip Alley in Pyeonghwa Market, which holds a 50-year tradition and the sorrows and stories of ordinary people, has been selected as the best dining street in South Korea. We will spare no administrative support so that the food culture of Dong-gu leads the way and visitors to this alley can enjoy dining with peace of mind."
Located inside Pyeonghwa Market in Sinam 1-dong, Dong-gu, Daegu, Dakttongjip Alley opened in 1972. Despite Daegu City and Dong-gu Office making every effort to develop the shopping alley, the number of restaurants in the alley has been decreasing every year.
In the mid-1990s, there were over 60 Dakttongjip restaurants in the alley, but the number decreased to 28 in 2016, 24 in 2019, and recently 22.
