[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daehyun] Judges Song Kyung-geun (Judicial Research and Training Institute Class 22), Ban Jeong-woo (Class 23), and Kim Jeong-jung (Class 26) of the Seoul Central District Court were recommended as candidates for the chief judge of the Seoul Central District Court on the 9th. The Seoul Central District Court held a candidate recommendation committee meeting on the same day and announced that these three were recommended to Chief Justice Kim Myung-soo as candidates for the chief judge position.
Earlier, the court received nominations for chief judge candidates from its affiliated judges, and electronic voting was conducted from the 6th to the 8th for the three nominated candidates. According to regulations, 2 to 4 judges who receive more than 10% of the votes are recommended to the Chief Justice. All three received more than 10% of the votes and were selected as final candidates. Chief Justice Kim will appoint one of them in next year's chief judge personnel appointments.
The chief judge candidate recommendation system is a system where judges recommended by their peers are nominated as candidates for chief judge. Judges with more than 22 years of legal experience and more than 10 years of judicial service are eligible for recommendation.
Since 2019, chief judge recommendations have been made 17 times at 13 district courts nationwide. Next year, chief judges who have gone through the recommendation system will serve at 20 district courts, excluding the Incheon District Court, where the chief judge's term remains, and local family courts including the Seoul Central District Court.
