Gokseong-gun Awarded 'Grand Prize' for Clean Jeonnam's Top Village

[Gokseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Cha Jong-sun] Gokseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Sang-cheol) announced that it won the grand prize in the comprehensive evaluation of the ‘Clean Jeonnam Best Village Making’ project for cities and counties, securing a business fund of 100 million KRW.

The Clean Jeonnam Best Village Making project, in which residents directly participate and lead, selects 1,000 villages annually from 2021 to 2025.

Villages that receive excellent evaluations for environmental and landscape improvements are supported with 3 million KRW annually for three years, totaling 9 million KRW.

From 2023, each village receives 5 million KRW in support.

This evaluation focused on quantitative assessment (60 points) including Best Village participation rate, task force operation performance, and budget ratio for key projects, as well as qualitative assessment (40 points) including image evaluation and excellent case site evaluation.

Six outstanding cities and counties were selected, and the award grade was determined through a final presentation review.

Gokseong-gun promoted the Clean Jeonnam Best Village project as a cornerstone to realize an open village community and resident autonomy council by concurrently implementing key policies.

They actively supported the project by conducting Clean Jeonnam Best Village workshops visiting villages, community revitalization projects, training and operating local activists in Gokseong-gun, and producing and distributing village project menus.

As a result, three villages?Osan Gwaneumsa Village, Seokgok Yupyeong Village, and Ogok Oji 5-gu Village?were selected as excellent Best Villages in Jeollanam-do this year.

Only 50 villages out of 2,000 were selected as excellent Best Villages and receive an additional project fund of 2 million KRW each in 2023.

Osan Gwaneumsa Village decorated the village entrance with tile murals, creating a village gallery that provides sightseeing attractions for tourists visiting Gwaneumsa Temple.

A special feature of this village is that they created a village band and share village activity updates anytime and anywhere through a smart village broadcast.

Seokgok-myeon Yupyeong Village transformed an abandoned old village hall into a village antique exhibition hall.

By collecting and displaying antiques filled with residents’ memories, it has become a local landmark that fosters harmony among residents.

Ogok-myeon Oji Village is located near the Seomjingang Train Village, a representative tourist destination of Gokseong-gun.

It is changing into a distinctive village by planting moss phlox to provide sightseeing attractions for tourists.

A county official said, “Ninety-two villages in Gokseong-gun are actively participating in the Best Village project, revitalizing the villages. We will strive to make this project a catalyst to restore the spirit of village community filled with neighborly affection and to form a more mature resident autonomy culture.”
