The First 'Gangneung Traditional Noodle Cuisine' Festival... What Flavors Will It Bring? Gangneung Noodle Festival Official Poster [Gangneung City]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] The traditional noodle dish festival representing Gangneung will be held in Gangneung for the first time this year.

According to Gangneung City on the 9th, during the '2022 Gangneung Noodle Festival (12.16~18)' held around Wolhwa Street in Gangneung, visitors can enjoy Gangneung-style traditional noodle dishes such as Jang Kalguksu, Makguksu, Jjamppong, and Ongsimi Kalguksu.

Starting with a live cooking show by Korea’s representative culinary expert Chef Oh Se-deuk on the morning of the 16th, the official opening ceremony on the 17th will feature a large-scale Kalguksu making event and a mukbang show by comedian Yoo Min-sang, followed by a finale performance by Daybreak on the 18th.

Booths serving noodles that reflect Gangneung’s unique characteristics will be operated, and in the live cooking show, famous chefs will reinterpret Gangneung’s noodle dishes in their own styles.

Pre-event participation programs such as a noodle pulling video contest, on-site events guessing famous Gangneung Jang Kalguksu restaurants by taste alone, natural broth making, and noodle dough experience will also be prepared.

Visitors who submit receipts from purchases made at Gangneung’s representative traditional markets, Jungang and Seongnam Markets, will receive souvenirs. A 'Noodle Map' guiding tourists to various noodle restaurants in Gangneung will be distributed, and a 'Noodle Stamp Tour' will be conducted.

Visitors who bring back disposable cups will be given 'natural flowerpot fertilizer' made by decomposing food waste from the festival site.

The city plans to expand Gangneung’s noodle culture into a tourism product and continue it as a sustainable representative tourism festival of Gangneung, rather than a one-time event.

Um Geum-moon, head of the Tourism Policy Division, said, "We expect this to be an opportunity to reexamine the noodle culture of Gangneung, a city rich in food," and added, "Ahead of many scheduled international events, we will do our best to develop tourism content that citizens and tourists can enjoy."
