[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Sehee] Despite economic difficulties such as high inflation and high interest rates, acts of kindness are warming the cold wave.
According to the Fruit of Love on the 9th, the amount raised through the 2023 Sharing Campaign from the 1st to the 6th of this month was 93.9 billion won. This is 25.4 billion won more than the same period last year (68.6 billion won).
A representative of the Fruit of Love said, "Compared to last year, more donations were collected this year," adding, "There are many people practicing sharing with the thought that we must help each other especially in difficult times."
Recently, regular donations have also increased, mainly among people in their 20s and 30s. Mihee Kim (27), an office worker living in Gangnam, Seoul, said, "I got a job at my desired company earlier this month," and added, "It was financially difficult while preparing for employment, but now that I have some leeway, I want to help neighbors in difficult situations."
Su Han Chae (35), who lives in Gwangjang-dong, Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, said, "I have been sponsoring the Child Fund for seven years," and added, "I make regular donations and plan to donate organs in the future."
Do Hyun Kim, a first-year student at Changwon Technical High School in Gyeongsangnam-do, and his younger brother Do Hoon Kim, a second-year student at Masan Middle School in Gyeongsangnam-do, have each been practicing sharing for three years by saving 300,000 won each from their allowances. Their parents said, "We feel proud and a bit shy," but also said, "We are proud of our two sons." On the 6th, President Yoon Suk-yeol and Supreme Court Chief Justice Kim Myung-soo also donated to the Fruit of Love.
The Fruit of Love uses the raised funds for ▲providing necessary items to vulnerable groups ▲victim counseling for trauma healing of crime victims ▲programs to enhance information accessibility for people with hearing and speech disabilities.
Some voices express that donation promotions are burdensome. On the Sejong Mom Cafe, a post was uploaded saying, "The daycare center sent promotional materials related to the Fruit of Love," and "I don’t know how much or how to donate, and it feels like it’s mandatory, so I want to hear advice from other moms."
Yeonhee Kim (42), a self-employed chicken restaurant owner, said, "Although it is said that COVID-19 has recovered, sales have not yet returned to pre-COVID levels," adding, "Even if I want to help others, I don’t have the means to do so."
