[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Isul] Actress Moon Geun-young will receive the newly established 'Kang Soo-yeon Award' this year.
On the 8th, the Women Filmmakers Association announced that Moon Geun-young has been selected as the recipient of the 'Kang Soo-yeon Award' at the '2022 Women Filmmakers Festival' awards ceremony to be held on the 15th at Cinecube Gwanghwamun in Seoul.
The association stated, "We established the 'Kang Soo-yeon Award' this year to honor Kang Soo-yeon, a pioneer and great filmmaker who elevated the status of Korean cinema for over 50 years."
The 'Kang Soo-yeon Award' is given without gender distinction to filmmakers who have contributed to the development of Korean cinema in various fields such as acting, directing, screenplay, production, and staff. The award carries a prize of 5 million KRW.
From November 6 last year to the 5th of last month, recipients for 11 categories including the highest honor, the Woman Filmmaker of the Year Award, the Achievement Award, the Director Award, and the Acting Award, were selected from theatrical releases and original films on online video services (OTT).
Marking its 23rd anniversary this year, the ‘2022 Women Filmmakers Festival’ serves as a platform to review the activities of the Women Filmmakers Association and the Korean Film Gender Equality Center 'Dundun', leading efforts to advocate for the rights of women filmmakers and to foster an inclusive and diverse film industry.
Meanwhile, the Women Filmmakers Association operates the Korean Film Gender Equality Center Dundun as a major project. Since its opening in 2018, the center has focused on counseling and preventive education regarding sexual violence within the film industry. It provides legal support and medical consultation fees for victims of sexual violence to aid in resolving incidents and restoring daily life, and conducts sexual violence prevention education tailored to the characteristics of the film industry, targeting film sets, film festivals, and film-related universities.
