[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Koo Dae-sun] Gunwi County, a basic local government in Gyeongbuk, will become part of Daegu City starting July next year.
The "Act on the Change of Jurisdictional Boundaries between Gyeongsangbuk-do and Daegu Metropolitan City" for the incorporation of Gunwi County into Daegu City passed the National Assembly plenary session on the 8th.
After the bill passed the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee on December 1st, it swiftly proceeded through the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 7th and was approved in the plenary session on the same day. As a result, on July 1, 2023, Gunwi County in Gyeongsangbuk-do will be administratively changed to Gunwi County in Daegu Metropolitan City.
With Gunwi County's incorporation, Daegu City's area will expand from 884㎢ to 1498㎢, an increase of about 70%, instantly making it the largest among all special and metropolitan cities nationwide. Daegu City expects that the expanded area and abundant available resources will serve as a foundation for fostering future new industries.
Additionally, the incorporation of Gunwi County into Daegu City, a prerequisite for the construction of the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Integrated New Airport, is expected to accelerate the airport construction project through smooth cooperation on various permits and legal affairs by Gunwi County.
Since the bill passed during this year's regular National Assembly session as originally targeted, Daegu City plans to fully implement follow-up measures to ensure the incorporation is stably completed by July 1 next year.
Key preparations include △reviewing major project plans (urban and transportation plans, school district adjustments, agriculture and water supply sectors) △revising local ordinances △transfer of national and public property and goods △handover of administrative tasks △adjustment of revenue and expenditure budgets △updating computer systems △organizing various records △maintenance of guide signs, etc.
Furthermore, a joint consultative body among Daegu City, Gyeongbuk Province, and Gunwi County will be formed and operated to resolve differences and promote mutual consultation during the incorporation preparation process.
Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu City, said, "The passage of the bill for Gunwi County's incorporation into Daegu has turned on a green light for the passage of the Special Act on the Integrated New Airport," adding, "We will steadily prepare long-term plans to grow together with Gunwi County into a great leap forward as an airport city and a city of new industries."
