[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Incheon City announced on the 8th that it plans to establish a 'West Sea 5 Islands Special Support Task Force (TF)' in the organizational restructuring to be implemented in February next year.

The city decided to create a dedicated organization to comprehensively handle related tasks in one place in order to manage the affairs related to the West Sea 5 Islands more systematically and thoroughly.

The West Sea 5 Islands Special Support Task Force will work on promoting legal amendments to improve the living conditions of residents on the West Sea 5 Islands and to strengthen support in administrative, financial, and security areas.

Earlier, Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok expressed his intention to elevate the West Sea 5 Islands to a special administrative district and establish extraordinary administrative, financial, and security measures during his visit to Yeonpyeongdo in October.

Accordingly, the city has begun reviewing amendments to the 'West Sea 5 Islands Support Special Act' and proposing them to central government agencies to establish the basis for designating a 'special administrative (management) district' to improve the living conditions of residents and to strengthen various administrative and financial support measures.

Additionally, the city is also proposing to raise the living support allowance paid to residents of the West Sea 5 Islands to 200,000 won.

An official from Incheon City stated, "As the West Sea 5 Islands are a border area of great security importance, special management and expanded support are necessary," adding, "We will create a dedicated organization to oversee West Sea 5 Islands affairs and strive to improve residents' living conditions and convenience."
