Jeongeup-si to Host Creative Pansori Performance 'Nokdu Janggun Jeon Bongjun' on the 10th

[Jeongeup=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City, Jeonbuk Province, announced on the 7th that it will hold a creative pansori performance titled ‘Nokdu General Jeon Bong-jun’ at Yeonji Art Hall at 3 p.m. on the 10th.

Hosted by Jeongeup City and organized by the Creative Pansori Research Institute (Director Im Jin-taek), the ‘Nokdu General Jeon Bong-jun’ performance weaves the birth and process of the Donghak Peasant Revolution and the exploits of General Jeon Bong-jun, who led the 1894 Donghak Peasant Revolution, into a pansori performance.

Composed of three parts, this performance depicts the stories of Suun Choi Je-u, Haewol Choi Si-hyung, and Nokdu General Jeon Bong-jun, who sought to save the suffering people in a world dominated by incompetent royal authority and powerful aristocrats.

The first part features Master Wang Gi-seok, a Jeollabuk-do intangible cultural asset and holder of the pansori ‘Sugungga’ skill, who covers the topics of the restoration of the founder’s honor and the Gobu uprising under the theme ‘Please Prohibit Greed.’

The second part features Master Song Jae-young, a Jeollabuk-do intangible cultural asset and holder of the pansori ‘Simcheongga’ skill, who passionately sings about the armed uprising, Baeksan proclamation, the victory at Hwangtohyeon, and the entry into Jeonju Fortress under the theme ‘The suffering people, rise at this moment.’

The final third part is performed by Master Im Jin-taek, who has long devoted himself to Donghak and completed the script for this work, singing about the establishment of the Jipgangso and the Battle of Ugeumchi under the theme ‘Let’s go, Gap-o year.’

All Jeongeup citizens can watch the performance free of charge.

Mayor Lee Hak-su said, “Through this creative pansori performance, I hope that the revolutionary spirit of Jeongeup, the birthplace of the Donghak Peasant Revolution, will deeply permeate among the citizens and become the spiritual foundation of the Republic of Korea.”
