Gwangyang City Collaborates for Win-Win Development and Shared Prosperity in the Southern Coast's Central Southern Region

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Jeong In-hwa, mayor of Gwangyang City, Jeonnam, announced that on the 6th, he attended the Namhaean Southern Central Region Development Council held at Jinju K-Entrepreneurship Center (located in Jisu-myeon, Jinju City) and discussed cooperative tasks for regional development.

This regular meeting was attended by mayors and county heads from nine local governments in Jeonnam and Gyeongnam, where they resolved the budget for the Namhaean Southern Central Region Development Council for next year and the corresponding joint projects. They also adopted a joint proposal for regional development and had in-depth discussions on cooperative tasks between cities and counties.

The council plans to promote tourism vitality among cities and counties next year centered on the Namhaean Southern Central Region 'NubiGO' tour and expand cultural and arts festivals with youth participation. They also intend to focus on marketing overseas agricultural and specialty products, which had slowed due to COVID-19.

Additionally, new projects such as discovering the Yi Sun-sin theme project and cooperation on the Hometown Love Donation System will be actively developed. The '2023 Suncheon World Garden Expo' and the '2023 Hadong World Tea Expo' to be held next year are expected to serve as catalysts to promote the Namhaean Southern Central Region globally.

Furthermore, they agreed to jointly cooperate with central government departments and the National Assembly on three matters: the expansion of National Road No. 2 between Gwangyang and Sacheon, the revision of the "Special Act on Truth Investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident," and fostering the aerospace industry centered on Sacheon and Goheung.

Among the council’s joint proposal tasks, the 'Comprehensive Tourist Site Development along the Seomjin River' will be re-submitted for joint cooperation at the next regular meeting after in-depth discussions among related local governments to promote a more progressive project.

Jeong In-hwa, mayor of Gwangyang City, said, "In a situation where all values and population are concentrated in the metropolitan area, I believe the Namhaean Southern Central Region Development Council can play a pivotal role in dispersing this concentration."

He added, "Let us fully embrace this purpose, support each local government’s projects, and unite our efforts for the joint prosperity and development of the nine cities and counties."

Meanwhile, the Namhaean Southern Central Region Development Council is an administrative council composed of nine cities and counties: Gwangyang City, Yeosu City, Suncheon City, Goheung County, Boseong County in Jeonnam, and Jinju City, Sacheon City, Namhae County, Hadong County in Gyeongnam. It was founded in May 2011 to establish a development hub for the Namhaean region and promote mutual exchange between Yeongnam and Honam regions.

The council promotes various joint and linked projects such as joint sales centers for local agricultural specialty products, operation of wide-area city tours, personnel exchanges among city and county officials, and exchanges in sports and culture, serving as a focal point for east-west harmony.
