[Asia Economy Reporter Yuri Kim] Lotte ON announced on the 7th that it will carry out the 'Rubber Duck Project 2022' together with Lotte World Tower and 119 Leo.
Lotte ON said that this project was planned to recycle the rubber duck used in the exhibition in an eco-friendly way instead of discarding it immediately after the exhibition. About 1,000 upcycled products were made using rubber duck fabric, and the produced items will be used for donations and customer event giveaways at the end of the year.
The rubber duck, which met about 6.5 million people at Seokchon Lake in Jamsil, Seoul, during October, is a work made by stitching together about 200 pieces of polyester fabric. The polyester fabric, which covers an area of about 1,500㎡, was originally scheduled to be discarded after the exhibition ended, but under Lotte ON's planning and with the help of Lotte World Tower and 119 Leo, it was reborn as about 1,000 rubber duck goods.
Lotte World Tower, which hosted the exhibition, and the artist decided to donate the rubber duck free of charge, and 119 Leo, an upcycling company specializing in discarded firefighting suits, received the fabric, cleaned it thoroughly, disassembled it, and reprocessed it to make rubber duck goods. The rubber duck goods come in two types: rubber duck pouches and rubber duck mini pouches.
The rubber duck pouch is sized to hold a laptop, and 119 Leo added significance by making cushioning material using discarded firefighting suits. Among the upcycled goods, 119 items will be donated to firefighters in the Songpa area, and some will be given as souvenirs to customers participating in eco-friendly activities for the planet.
Lotte ON is conducting a 'Comments for the Earth Event' until the 18th of this month to encourage customers to engage in eco-friendly activities using the rubber duck goods. Among participating customers, 777 will be selected by lottery to receive a 'Rubber Duck Mini Pouch.'
From the 19th to the 25th of this month, a 'Rubber Duck × 119 Leo Popup Store' will be held at Lotte World Mall in Jamsil together with Lotte World Tower. During the event, various upcycled products made from discarded firefighting suits by 119 Leo, as well as rubber duck goods, will be exhibited. Customers who visit the venue and purchase 119 Leo products worth more than 10,000 KRW through the Lotte ON app on-site and verify their purchase will receive a rubber duck mini pouch on a first-come, first-served basis.
Meanwhile, since February, Lotte ON has been running the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) project called 'Iroon Brand,' which discovers and introduces brands that carry out earth-friendly management activities such as vegan and upcycling. They also held an offline exhibition with 119 Leo, which upcycles discarded firefighting suits and donates part of the sales revenue to firefighters. With The Body Shop, they conducted activities encouraging participation in refill stations to reduce plastic waste as part of eco-friendly efforts.
