[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Emart announced on the 7th that it will introduce eco-friendly packaging to ensure the sustainable growth of the meal kit market.

Emart replaced the packaging of 15 out of 50 Peacock meal kit products with eco-friendly packaging in the second half of this year. They plan to switch the packaging of all meal kit products by the first quarter of next year.

Emart developed eco-friendly meal kit packaging due to concerns about the increasing amount of recyclable waste as the meal kit market rapidly grows. First, the plastic cover part was changed to a material containing 50% recycled raw materials.

While the existing meal kit container was made by coating kraft paper, the eco-friendly packaging is made by combining bamboo and sugarcane that naturally biodegrade without coating. In particular, compared to the existing paper containers, it has excellent durability and can be reused as a multi-use container.

Lastly, the recipe was directly printed on the sleeve covering the container to reduce paper usage.

In addition, efforts to minimize vinyl use continue, such as combining similar ingredients into one package to reduce the amount of vinyl used for packaging ingredients.

Through the introduction of eco-friendly packaging, Emart is expected to reduce about 1,800 tons of paper and 130 tons of plastic annually.

Choi Hyun, head of Emart Peacock, said, “We listened to consumers’ voices about packaging improvements from the early days of the meal kit market and developed eco-friendly packaging. We will lead genuine ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives by applying the packaging not only to Peacock but also to meal kits of other brands sold at Emart.”
