Advanced maritime unmanned forces and new weapons from domestic defense companies were all gathered in one place.


The 2022 Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin Defense Industry Exhibition (YIDEX), which shows the current status of the ‘K-Maritime Defense Industry,’ opened on the 6th at the Naval Academy campus in Jinhae, Gyeongnam.


This event, prepared to promote win-win cooperation among large, medium, and small enterprises and to boost exports, is jointly hosted by Changwon City, the Naval Academy, and the Naval Logistics Command, and organized by the Changwon Industry Promotion Agency, continuing until the 9th.


On the day, the Navy unveiled the Turtle Ship for the first time at the pier next to the Naval Academy Museum, reconstructed based on records from the Imjin War era.


The Turtle Ship revealed that day was designed starting in 2019 and completed after about four years. The Naval Academy formed a professional advisory group consisting of professors, researchers, and external experts in related fields during the design and construction process, holding several discussions to reproduce the Turtle Ship as closely as possible to the one from the Imjin War period.

On the second day of the defense industry exhibition, the 7th, an export consultation meeting, defense industry innovation cluster open innovation, and Korea-Australia defense conference will be held at the Academic Information Center multipurpose hall. On the 3rd and 4th days, there will be briefings on new defense technologies and products, and a Smart Navy conference.


During the event, the Naval Academy will be open to the public, showcasing the latest forces such as the K-9 self-propelled howitzer, K-2 tank, and 2.75-inch guided rocket Bigung. Visitors can also enjoy ship open events, military uniform experience events, and a virtual reality simulator experience of specialized Marine Corps training.


This year’s Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin Defense Industry Exhibition is a venue for sharing new technologies to implement the Smart Navy policy promoted by the Navy based on Defense Reform 4.0. This year, 106 booths participated from major domestic and international defense companies and related organizations.


LIG Nex1 showcased a variety of maritime weapon systems including unmanned surface vessels (Haegum-2, 3, 5), unmanned underwater vehicles, multipurpose unmanned helicopters, Haegung, and Bigung at this exhibition.

On this day, LIG Nex1, boasting the largest achievements in the domestic unmanned surface vessel defense sector, revealed swarm operation technology of ‘Haegum-2, 3, 5’ and core technologies of each platform based on the completed unmanned surface vessel ‘Haegum’ platform.


A LIG Nex1 official participating in this industry exhibition said, “This is a meaningful exhibition where we can showcase weapon systems filled with the will and passion to protect the maritime nation,” adding, “We are pouring efforts into developing various maritime unmanned systems including Haegum to become a representative unmanned force of the Navy’s announced ‘Navy Sea GHOST.’”
