[Asia Economy Reporter Jang Hee-jun] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that it held the 2022 Security Council Officer Meeting on the 5th in preparation for South Korea's bid to become a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2024?2025 term.
At the meeting, officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters and key multilateral mission officers attended to review the current status of preparations for serving as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and future plans.
Additionally, considering that many Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regional issues are discussed in the Security Council, discussions were held with officers from overseas missions responsible for the region regarding considerations when discussing MENA regional agendas within the Security Council. Major Security Council research institutions, including the International Crisis Group (ICG) and the Center for Humanitarian Dialogue (CHD), also attended to brief on key Security Council discussion trends.
Among the three major UN core bodies, South Korea has previously served twice as a non-permanent member of the Security Council. The election for the non-permanent member for the 2024?2025 term will be held in June next year in New York.
