[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Kim Hyunjung] The number of new COVID-19 cases in China has sharply declined, recording figures in the 20,000 range. This is interpreted as a rapid decrease in related numbers due to the recent abolition of mandatory polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing by Chinese authorities, which has reduced the number of tests conducted.

According to the National Health Commission of China on the 5th, the number of new COVID-19 cases nationwide as of the previous day was 29,724 (including 25,477 asymptomatic cases). This is the first time in 12 days since October 22 (28,883 cases) that the number of new cases has been recorded in the 20,000 range. The related figures peaked at 40,052 on November 27 and have since sharply decreased.

By region, the numbers are as follows: Chongqing 4,822, Guangzhou 4,707, Beijing 3,752, Harbin 589, Shanghai 565, among others.

The decrease in confirmed cases appears to be due to a sharp decline in the testing population itself. Major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, and some regions including Zhejiang Province have relaxed the previously mandatory PCR testing measures. From this day, in Beijing and Shanghai, it is no longer necessary to show a negative PCR test certificate when using public transportation such as subways and buses.

In Shanghai, the economic capital, it was announced that proof of testing would no longer be required for entry into public places such as parks and amusement parks, and Zhejiang Province also announced that it will not check PCR test results when using public transportation or public places in most cities. Chinese President Xi Jinping also indirectly suggested the possibility of a "with-COVID" approach during a meeting with Charles Michel, President of the European Union (EU) Council, in Beijing on the 1st, stating that "the Omicron virus is less fatal than Delta, opening the way for easing lockdowns."
