[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-seon] The Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) announced on the 5th that it held a China Personal Information Protection Law Compliance Management Cooperation Forum targeting Korean companies based in China and Chinese companies, together with the Internet Society of China (ISC).
Since 2017, KISA and ISC have held an annual joint forum to support compliance management by raising awareness of major laws related to personal information protection in China for Korean and Chinese businesspeople, sharing information on legal content and compliance methods.
Recently, the Chinese government has been strengthening regulations related to personal information protection in China, including imposing a fine of 8.026 billion yuan (approximately 1.55 trillion won) on Didi Chuxing for violating the Personal Information Protection Law. Laws related to personal information and data processing are also being reinforced.
KISA explained, "This cooperation forum was held as part of compliance management support to ensure that not only Korean companies operating in China but also Chinese companies do not suffer disadvantages such as fines from the Chinese government for violating China's personal information protection laws."
The forum, themed "Strengthening Personal Information Protection and Data Security Capabilities," covered topics such as understanding China's three data laws for Korean companies in China, personal information protection and compliance management for Chinese companies, and key improvement cases during security grade evaluations under the Network Security Law.
