[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-ju] SK Biopharm has announced the first research case using a multi-biosignal-based wearable device developed in-house. Once development is complete, it is expected to aid in epilepsy management in the future.

According to SK Biopharm on the 5th, Professor Kim Heon-min's research team from the Department of Pediatrics at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital participated in the annual meeting of the American Epilepsy Society (AES 2022) held from the 2nd to the 6th of this month (local time) in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, where they presented preliminary research results on epilepsy symptom monitoring sponsored by SK Biopharm.

The research team conducted a study from March last year to March this year on 14 epilepsy patients aged 9 to 27 using this device. To collect seizure data from the patients, the team continuously measured biosignals through the device for several hours daily. They also recorded the timing of patients' seizures on a mobile app.

At AES 2022, Professor Kim presented the possibility that the device could have a significant effect on detecting epilepsy seizures in the future, based on 1,686 seizure events collected over 3,723 hours through the study. He stated, "Unlike the conventional epilepsy seizure recording method that relied on testimonies from patients and caregivers, data-based accurate seizure records will enable improved epilepsy management."

The SK Biopharm device used in this study can continuously measure EEG for more than 8 hours and transmit the collected data to a server in real time, making it convenient for epilepsy seizure research. Professor Kim reported that most patients participating in the study wore the device for over a month without significant discomfort.

SK Biopharm plans to develop 'Zero Wired' into an AI-based medical device for epilepsy seizure detection and prediction through future clinical validation. Zero Wired is an improved version of the device used in the research at Seoul National University Bundang Hospital. Zero Wired recently received the 'Innovation Award' at CES 2023.
