[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The ‘Taebongbo’ located downstream of Gasuwon Bridge on Gapcheon Stream in Daejeon will be dismantled next year.
Daejeon City announced on the 4th that the Korea Environment Corporation began the dismantling work of Taebongbo this month and plans to complete the demolition by June next year.
Taebongbo is an artificial weir located 200 meters downstream of Gasuwon Bridge on Gapcheon Stream in Daejeon, which has been operated for the purpose of maintaining river water and agricultural water use.
However, based on the fact that there has been no agricultural water intake performance in recent years and that it does not conform to the river’s ecological environment, the city applied for the Ministry of Environment’s Aquatic Ecosystem Continuity Securing Project last year, and the dismantling was confirmed.
The Ministry of Environment’s Aquatic Ecosystem Continuity Securing Project is a project implemented by the Korea Environment Corporation to investigate and evaluate structures such as agricultural weirs to improve or dismantle them in order to restore the health and naturalness of aquatic ecosystems.
The Korea Environment Corporation completed the detailed design in August and prepared for the dismantling of Taebongbo by selecting a contractor through a project announcement in November.
A city official said, “We expect that the dismantling project of Taebongbo will improve the aquatic ecosystem in the middle and upper reaches of Gapcheon and reduce green algae and odors,” adding, “In particular, we anticipate that this project will help designate the 3.7 km section of the aquatic ecosystem adjacent to Taebongbo as a national wetland protection area.”
